Senior Hardware Design Engineer

As a senior hardware design engineer, you’ll be part of a team developing programmable microwave synthesis and measurement hardware for the control of quantum devices.  You can expect to play a leading role in the design and testing of microwave circuit boards that can be used as part of a scalable, cost-efficient architecture for the control of quantum devices.  Your programming skills will be vital, allowing you to develop firmware for the programmable integrated circuits (typically FPGAs) used in the hardware you develop, as well as to assist with the design of low-level device drivers built to mediate between them and the higher levels of our control software stack.  You will be working on a truly interesting, often complex challenges that will require all of your creativity, problem-solving and analytical skills.

Responsibilities

Quantum computers based on superconducting circuits are controlled via microwave frequency signals.  These signals must be produced on-the-fly by low latency digital signal processing hardware  You will be responsible for the development and maintenance of large-scale microwave synthesis and measurement systems:

 

  • Full design flow from concept work, specification, programming, verification and automatic testing of firmware and hardware.
  • Leading architecture improvements to enhance capabilities, performance and scalability.

Skills Required

  • MSc or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or equivalent
  • Excellent knowledge and experience working with FPGAs using VHDL. Knowledge of verilog a plus
  • Knowledge of C/C++, Python
  • Strong problem solving, troubleshooting and analysis skills 
  • Experience with digital signal processing and algorithm development
  • Working knowledge of radio and microwave frequency electronics such as GHz sampling rate ADCs and DACs
  • Experience maintaining systems used in a production environment

Skills Desirable

  • Previous experience with PC/FPGA Interface Design.
  • Experience working with High-Level Synthesis and FPGA Simulation tools.
  • Experience designing microwave frequency PCBs.
